The following video was recorded while in Nashville visiting my dear friend and super talented award winning songwriter and performer, Tai Shan. She helped peal away and reshape my lyrics for my original song, “You Can’t Bring Me Down,” that came to me in a dream. It was recorded for documenting purposes but felt it should be shared. I’m looking forward to recording it with my band.

A CLOSER LOOK

Joey was drawn to the vibrant Seattle music scene where he honed his skills in soulful improvisation, digging into the pocket, and embraced the challenge of accompanying a wide genre of bands and artists. You can find him doing hip hop, poetry flows, top 40 groups, big bands, jazz and classical choirs, folk, rock, reggae and dub, Afro cuban, Latin and world, electronic and disco, soul and Motown, and his blend of it all – Soulbaum.

JOEY’S ROOTS

Growing up in rural Washington, Joey’s passion for music was evident from an early age, with childhood memories of instruments glowing and music painting vivid pictures in his mind, much like Disney’s Fantasia. He began his journey through school programs, playing woodwind and brass instruments, singing in choirs, and performing harmonies and piano in his father’s rock band by age 12. As he grew, his musical horizons expanded through exposure to big band and smooth jazz via local radio and school programs, leading to milestones such as attending the Burton Jazz Camp for trumpet and being selected for the All-State Jazz Choir as a high school senior, standing out among hundreds of applicants.

Joey’s passion and talent earned him a full-ride scholarship to Olympic College in Bremerton, Washington, where he studied jazz and classical voice under Teresa (Fraser) Eliason and Susan Trainer, while refining his composition and improvisation skills with Rick White and Ray Ohles. His dedication led to multiple first-place awards for singing and original vocal jazz compositions at renowned festivals like the Lionel Hampton and Reno Jazz Festivals. During this period, he also began fronting bands, developing his production skills, creating original music, and helping others bring their compositions to life.

CURRENT WORK

He teaches at the Seattle Drum School of Music and contributes to Mo’Jam Mondays while also working on singles, EPs, and music videos. His ambitions also include doing a small tour around the Puget Sound. You can also find him working with various other bands and artists as a backup musician. (see “Current Endembles” below)

WHY CREATE MUSIC?

Music is the only idiom that’s scientifically proven to access the most parts of your brain at one time and actually grows connections in your brain when you simply try to create music. (learn more by reading “This Is Your Brain On Music” by David Levine)
